Nevius, John Livingston

Nevius, John Livingston
(1829–93)
   Missionary.
Nevius was educated at Princeton Seminary in New Jersey, and he served as a Presbyterian missionary in China from 1854. He is remembered as the author of the ‘Nevius method’ of mission which involved self-support, laywitness, self-government and the building of churches in indigenous styles. This approach was used particularly in Korea where a highly successful church network was constructed which survives to this day.
